What is BRICS?

BRICS is a political grouping of large emerging economies. The letters began as an investment shorthand; the forum itself is a later diplomatic project with summits, a development bank, and an expanding membership roster.

Read it in order

Start with the definition, then the roster, then the bank and the currency debate. Each page is an explainer, not a forecast.

  1. What the letters actually name

Jim O’Neill’s 2001 BRIC label is not the same object as the 2009 summit forum. Separate them before you argue about power.

  2. How membership changed

South Africa in 2010; Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE in 2024; later invitations. Some statuses are still unsettled — we label those.

  3. The New Development Bank

A multilateral lender agreed at Fortaleza in 2014, headquartered in Shanghai. Bank membership is related to, but not identical with, political membership.

  4. De-dollarization, framed

Local-currency settlement is a stated interest. A common BRICS currency does not exist. Trade-share percentages that circulate online are often unsourced; this desk will not invent them.
